| Until recently, eyeglasses and contact lenses were the
only practical ways to correct refractive vision errors.
Now, several new approaches to corrective eye surgery
are available, ranging from laser reshaping of the eye's
surface in procedures such as LASIK and PRK, to surgical
insertion of lenses to correct eyesight. |

LASIK Eye Surgery, also known as LASIK, is a
procedure that uses cool excimer laser energy to reshape
the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye.
The LASIK procedure addresses nearsightedness,
farsightedness, and astigmatism. LASIK has become the
alternative of choice for over two million eyes every
year.
LASIK Eye Surgery and other Laser Vision Correction
procedures have revolutionized vision care. Common
vision problems that cause one to be nearsighted,
farsighted and/or suffer from astigmatism can actually
be permanently treated. |

We use the newest generation of
laser technologies, the VISX
STAR S4 ActiveTrak™ Eximer Laser
System that incorporates
variable beam technology with an
active eye tracking system for
even greater accuracy and
safety. |

LASEK is a relatively new refractive procedure that
combines the benefits of LASIK and PRK. LASEK is a
surface ablation technique like PRK that may provide the
patient with faster vision recovery..

LASIK & Laser Eye Surgery:
LASIK (laser-assisted-in-situ-keratomileusis) and PRK
(photo refractive keratectomy) are now available to
correct your vision with laser surgery, and are
considered safe and permanent alternatives to wearing
corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses.
Laser eye surgery is performed by ophthalmologists (eye
surgeons) using a cool ultraviolet light beam, an
excimer laser, to reshape the surface of the eye (the
cornea). The LASIK surgeon uses a computer to adjust the
amount of laser required for your particular
prescription. You will be asked to look at a target
light for a few seconds while the laser sends pulses of
light to painlessly reshape your cornea. The actual
LASIK surgery usually takes less than five minutes.
Both nearsighted and farsighted people can benefit from
laser vision correction. With nearsighted people, the
goal is to flatten the too-steep cornea; with farsighted
people, the flat cornea is made steeper. Excimer lasers
can also correct astigmatism by smoothing an irregular
cornea into a more normal shape.
LASIK may be preferred to other laser procedures such as
PRK (also known as photorefractive keratectomy, Advanced
Surface Ablation and LASEK) because visual recovery is
fast. However, if you have thin corneas, large pupils,
or a high prescription, or are prone to eye trauma
through employment or contact sports, you may be a
better candidate for a “no incision procedure” such as
PRK, ASA or LASEK.
Since no incision is used with PRK, the top layer of the
cornea is first gently removed, allowing the excimer
laser to reshape the inner layers of the cornea. This
allows the eye to focus the light better, providing
clearer vision than before.
The structure of your eyes, as well as your
prescription, general health and job requirements will
all be considered to help determine which procedure is
best for you.
If you are considering laser eye surgery, your first
step is to choose a LASIK surgeon who can evaluate
whether LASIK, PRK or LASEK are right for you.
Your LASIK surgeon will perform a LASIK evaluation,
which is a complete eye exam to determine if you are a
good candidate for LASIK, what kind of vision correction
you need, and how much laser ablation (corneal tissue
removal) is required. The doctor will also ask about any
health conditions that may disqualify you altogether for
LASIK surgery.
During your LASIK evaluation, a corneal topographer will
be also be used; this is an instrument that photographs
your eye and creates a kind of "map" of your cornea. The
topographer will display any corneal irregularities and
the actual steepness or flatness that must be corrected
with the excimer laser. All corneas also have unique
irregularities much like a fingerprint. During your
LASIK evaluation, a special instrument called a "Wavefront
Analyzer" measures the surface of the cornea in three
dimensions and allows for a "custom" treatment of your
vision.
When choosing your LASIK surgeon, remember that Dr.
Alexandra Chebil has extensive experience with all forms
of laser eye surgery, and has performed over 20,000
laser eye procedures since 1987. We use the newest
generation of laser technologies, the VISX STAR S4
ActiveTrak™ Eximer Laser System that incorporates
variable beam technology with an active eye tracking
system for even greater accuracy and safety.
We encourage you to learn more about the procedures we
offer, such as LASIK in Irvine, Huntington Beach, and
Garden Grove, as well as about Dr. Alexandra Chebil.
Financing options for laser eye surgery:
LASIK, PRK, ASA and LASEK are elective procedures that
are not usually entirely covered by most insurance
plans. However, some insurance plans cover part of the
procedure, or offer their members treatment at a
negotiated or "preferred" rate. We will work with your
insurance providers to obtain any discounts and payments
offered by your plan.
We also accept most credit cards and offer easy
long-term and no-interest financing on all laser eye
procedures, including LASIK, PRK, ASA and LASEK. |
