Q: What happens at the complimentary LASIK consultation?

A: During this complete eye examination, you will learn more about LASIK as an alternative to glasses and contact lenses. Dr. Chebil and our friendly staff will perform a detailed evaluation of your eyes to determine if you are a candidate for LASIK. You will also meet with a patient counselor to discuss recovery time, your expectations and financing options. Dr. Chebil will personally examine your eyes and answer any questions you may have. Please remember to bring your glasses, contact lenses, and prescriptions to this exam. Family members are welcome to join you so they can also learn about the procedure.

Q: What is LASIK ?

A: LASIK is the most advanced procedure available for correcting certain eye conditions, including nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Dr. Chebil uses the VISX Star S4 laser with CustomVue and Iris Registration for outstanding accuracy and safety. Both eyes are treated the same day and visual recovery is fast. There is little or no postoperative discomfort and most of our patients return to work and other normal activities the very next day. All of our patients see well enough to drive without corrective lenses after their LASIK procedure.

Q: What is the difference between CustomVue LASIK and standard laser vision correction?

A: CustomVue LASIK differs from Standard LASIK because it has the potential to offer you better vision than you could ever obtain with your glasses or contacts in particular for night vision. This customized treatment first measures tiny imperfections on the surface of your eye using the VISX WaveScan® system, creating a “fingerprint”, of your eyes. This finger-print or WavePrint  is then used to create a treatment which is truly customized to your eyes. 

Q: Will I need to wear glasses after LASIK?

A: Most patients who have LASIK with Dr. Chebil no longer need glasses for their daily activities. However, if you’re over the age of 45, you may still need to wear reading glasses because of the normal aging process of the eye (presbyopia). To avoid the need for reading glasses, many patients over the age of 45 choose to have a treatment called “monovision” .Dr. Chebil will explain the benefits of this treatment during your initial evaluation.

Q: Are there any risks associated with LASIK?

A: As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with LASIK, but in the hands of highly skilled and experienced surgeon, LASIK can be a safe and successful procedure. Dr. Chebil and her staff will explain any risks associated with the procedure, as well as all the benefits. Remember that Dr. Chebil is a highly experienced eye surgeon who has performed over 20,000 successful LASIK procedures.

Q: Is LASIK painful?

A: Anesthetic eye drops are used to prevent discomfort during the procedure, although some patients may experience a mild sensation of pressure during the treatment. For a few hours after your procedure, it is normal for some patients to experience mild irritation, watery eyes, or light sensitivity. These symptoms should resolve within a few hours.

Q: How soon after LASIK can I return to my regular activities like driving or exercising?

A: In most cases, people who have had LASIK can return to work the next day. It is recommended to wait 5 days before wearing eye make-up and going in a dusty environment. Dr. Chebil recommends waiting one month before swimming with your eyes open or engaging in contact sports.

Q: Is LASIK permanent?

A: For most nearsighted patients with stable vision, LASIK is considered permanent. Patients who have a high prescription or are farsighted may need to have an “enhancement” after the initial procedure to achieve optimal results. Dr. Chebil will explain the probable benefits, and potential risks when determining whether or not an enhancement is necessary.

Q: What do I need to do to get ready for my LASIK procedure?

Please feel free to bring along a favorite CD to listen to during your LASIK treatment.

   You will need a driver after your LASIK procedure. Most people can drive the following day.

Accommodation: We offer discounted hotel rates with free shuttle service for our out-of-town patients. Please ask us to arrange this for you.  

If you wear contact lenses:

Soft contact lenses should be removed at least 48 hours before your LASIK procedure.

Soft toric lenses (for astigmatism) should be removed at least 5 days prior and rigid or gas-permeable at         least 3 weeks prior to LASIK.

Please do not wear any perfume or aerosol based product the day of your LASIK procedure. This includes perfume, after-shave or hair spray. Your LASIK procedure is performed in a climate controlled room which is very sensitive to these products  

Dress comfortably but avoid any “fuzzy” material which could affect the laser performance.

Follow-up Visits:

Dr. Chebil will see you back the day after your LASIK procedure. You will be seen by Dr. Chebil for one full year at appointments that fit your schedule.
